KIRTLAND AIR FORCE BASE, NEW MEXICO

In November 1999, the Air Force detected a fuel spill at the Bulk Fuels Facility on Kirtland Air Force Base, New Mexico. The spill was the result of a leaking pipe in the off-loading area of the facility. Following the discovery, the facility was removed from service and a series of investigations and interim clean-up actions were initiated, mandated by the New Mexico Environment Department, to assess and remediate contamination caused by the leak. The Air Force is partnering with NMED and other regulatory agencies to ensure contamination does not reach the drinking water supply and protect human health and the environment.
