Former Kulis Air National Guard Base (BRAC 2005)

Location: Anchorage, Alaska
Total Acreage: 129 Acres
Closed: August 2011

History
Kulis Air National Guard Base, Alaska, was established in 1955 as the home of the 144th Fighter-Bomber Squadron. The base provided disaster relief most notably following the Good Friday Earthquake in 1964 and the Chena River flood of 1967. Kulis also deployed Airmen in support of Operations Enduring Freedom and Iraqi Freedom.

Kulis was recommended for closure by the Defense Base Realignment and Closure Commission in 2005. The base was officially closed August 1, 2011.

Environmental Activities
AFCEC has worked closely with the United States Environmental Protection Agency and continues to work with the Alaska Department of Environmental Conservation to ensure environmental cleanup activities satisfy all regulatory standards while protecting human health and the environment. The Air National Guard managed BRAC cleanup actions at the former installation. Petroleum was the primary source of contamination, and one site remains to be cleaned up. The ANG is characterizing this site and will remediate as appropriate.

Property Transfer
AFCEC achieved Whole Base Transfer of 129 acres in 2011 when the Air Force lease was terminated and the property was returned to the state of Alaska. Today the former base property is managed by the Ted Stevens Anchorage International Airport as the Kulis Business Park. The business park includes approximately 230,000 square feet of building space in the form of office buildings, hangars, a large warehouse and three acres of parking lots.
