Air Force announces winners of the 2015 Design Awards

JOINT BASE SAN ANTONIO-LACKLAND, Texas --  The Air Force has announced the winners of the 2015 Air Force Design Awards. Eight projects were recognized for achieving excellence in design.

"These awards recognize the outstanding teamwork required to produce quality Air Force facilities, and the winning projects epitomize the skill and professionalism of our design teams," said Maj. Gen. Timothy Green, Air Force director of civil engineers.

The U.S. Air Force Design Awards program, established in 1976 and managed by the Air Force Civil Engineer Center, recognizes and promotes design excellence across the Air Force.

There are three levels of awards: honor awards and merit awards, signifying the best in design; and citation awards, for designs that possess a special aspect that also deserves recognition, said David Duncan, manager of the awards program.

"2015 marks the 40th anniversary of this prestigious awards program, and this year's winners exemplify the design quality the Air Force expects for all of our construction projects," Duncan said. "Half of this year's winners are in the Facility Renovations and Additions category, which is reflective of our reduction in the military construction budget in recent years and show good stewardship of our existing facilities."

The Air Force will recognized the top designs during an awards ceremony scheduled for Dec. 2 in San Antonio, Texas. 

2015 Honor Award
Landscape Architecture: 302nd Airlift Wing Courtyard, Peterson Air Force Base, Colorado.

2015 Merit Award
Facility Renovations and Additions: Mendel Elementary School addition, Yokota Air Base, Japan; and the second floor renovation of Building 20045, Wright-Patterson Air Force Base, Ohio.

Facility Design: F-35 Academic Training Facility, Luke Air Force Base, Arizona; and the Air Traffic Control Tower and Base Operations Facility, March Air Reserve Base, California.

2015 Citation Award
Facility Renovations and Additions: Golf Course Clubhouse, Hill Air Force Base, Utah; Family Support Center Renovation, Little Rock Air Force Base, Arkansas; and the Hangar 954 Renovation, Misawa Air Base, Japan.
