Snakes on parade

LACKLAND AIR FORCE BASE, Texas -- At left, a Texas indigo snake and other non-venomous and venomous snakes are on display while Blaine Eaton with the South Texas Herpetology Association starts a presentation on native Texas snakes during the San Antonio Armed Forces 2011 Earth Day Kickoff Expo March 31 in Port San Antonio's Bldg. 171. Kevin Porteck, Air Force Center for Engineering and the Environment's Natural Resources subject matter expert, and Mr. Eaton manned a booth at the expo and held a short class to provide information on snakes, their habitats and how to respond to them. In adidtion to learning about snakes, more than 2,500 Air Force occupants of the building had the opportunity to gather information from more than 15 military and community organizations on Earth-minded initiatives such as recycling, growing herb gardens and public transportation and van pooling. Attendees also had the opportunity to volunteer for community cleanup activities planned over the next few weeks. (Air Force photo by Debbie Aragon)
