Air Force Forestry Program

Diane Strohm, natural resource manager at the U.S. Air Force Academy, scrapes bark from a pine tree in search of beetle infestation. Proactive management activities at the Academy helped stave off the mountain pine beetle epidemic which ravaged almost four million acres of trees in Colorado. The Academy is currently battling a second beetle, known as the Ips beetle, which has proliferated due to drought conditions. (U.S. Air Force Photo/Kevin Elliott/Released)
