The Air Force Office of Energy Assurance is investing in efforts to increase the energy resilience of facilities across the enterprise while improving the accuracy and expediency of decision-making through a refresh of the Resilient Energy Assessment Framework.

In support of the Department of the Air Force, with a responsibility to strengthen energy and water resilience across installations worldwide, the Air Force Office of Energy Assurance works to tailor solutions that achieve this requirement while remaining both innovative and cost-effective. Initial partners selected in Air Force geologic hydrogen energy resilience initiative - May 29, 2026

ARLINGTON, Va. -- The Department of the Air Force is teaming up with Renaissance Philanthropy’s Chimaera Fund and industry partners to explore natural, underground hydrogen as a reliable energy source for its bases. This project helps meet a congressional mandate to ensure 99.9% energy availability at critical military sites by 2030. Focusing initially on Malmstrom AFB in Montana and McConnell AFB in Kansas. DAF announces next steps in Advanced Nuclear Power for Installations initiative—April 22,2026

ARLINGTON, Va. (AFNS) -- The Department of the Air Force, in conjunction with the Defense Innovation Unit, has selected three companies to potentially develop and operate a microreactor on a DAF installation, as part of the Advanced Nuclear Power for Installations initiative.

The service announced on April 8 that Buckley Space Force Base, Colorado, and Malmstrom Air Force Base, Montana, were the first two sites chosen for the ANPI initiative. Additionally, the service has selected Joint Base San Antonio, Texas, as the third potential location to site a nuclear microreactor under the ANPI initiative. Read the full article...

Air Force leading geologic hydrogen research initiative for Malmstrom & McConnell AFBs—Feb18, 2026

The Department of the Air Force is exploring the potential of geologic hydrogen as a primary energy resource. The availability and potential cost-effectiveness of geologic hydrogen could position it as a viable alternative or supplement to natural gas (primarily methane) and diesel-fueled generation systems.

DAF recently awarded a contract to Renaissance Philanthropy, a 501(c)(3) science & technology nonprofit focused on enabling ambitious science, technology, and innovation, to assess the feasibility of deploying geologic hydrogen near Malmstrom AFB, Mont. and McConnell AFB, Kan. DAF exploring lease opportunities for data centers in Alaska—February 23, 2026

The Department of the Air Force is gauging general interest in offering land for lease for large-scale commercial-use data center construction at Joint Base Elmendorf-Richardson, Eielson Air Force Base or Clear Space Force Station, all in Alaska.

The potential data centers would also include associated utility infrastructure and energy generation such as battery and fuel storage, distribution infrastructure, fiber communications and water-efficient cooling technologies. Read the full news release...

Powering Through the Dark: ERRE Exercises Reinforcing Installation Readiness—May 22, 2025

On March 11, Joint Base Langley-Eustis, Virginia, went dark—intentionally. Over a 24-hour period, the installation executed the Department of the Air Force’s longest Energy Resilience Readiness Exercise yet.

An ERRE isn’t just about cutting the power. First started in 2020 and overseen by Headquarters Air Force A4C today, the ERRE program plans and executes controlled outages to test installation resilience in degraded environments. See the full article...

U.S. advances microreactor program for military sites—April 14, 2025

The Defense Innovation Unit announced April 10 next steps in the Advanced Nuclear Power for Installations (ANPI) program, launched in 2024 to deploy microreactor nuclear systems for increased power reliability at select military locations.

The ANPI program is a collaboration between DIU, which is under the Department of Defense, and the Departments of the Army and the Air Force, with the goals of working to design, license, build, and operate one or more microreactor nuclear power plants for the armed forces. See the full article...

Air Force awards contract to test clean power plant technology—Sept. 24, 2024

JOINT BASE SAN ANTONIO-LACKLAND, Texas. The Department of the Air Force awarded its first contract to determine whether a power plant using geopressured geothermal systems, or GGS, can generate the clean energy needed for a base to achieve energy resilience.

The contract awards Sage Geosystems, Inc. a grant of $1.9 million, which the company will match with its own funding, to develop a demonstration project at an off-site test well in Starr County, Texas, in 2025. Read the full article...

DAF to Test Carbon-free, Flex-fuel Generators as Energy Resiliency Option—Aug. 6, 2024

JOINT BASE SAN ANTONIO-LACKLAND, Texas – The Department of the Air Force plans to reduce its carbon footprint and enhance energy resiliency at installations by taking advantage of new power-generation technology.

Seeking to fortify defense infrastructure, the DAF is awarding a contract for a prototype flex-fuel power generator to Mainspring Energy, Inc. The company will test the 125/230-kilowatt linear generator at Travis Air Force Base, California, beginning this fall. It can run on several gaseous fuels like natural gas, ammonia and hydrogen. The Federal Energy Management Program (FEMP) recently recognized a team of Air Force Civil Engineering Center (AFCEC) energy professionals with the Federal Energy and Water Management Award. This prestigious accolade commends their outstanding contributions to one of the Department of the Air Force's most significant water conservation initiatives, achieved through an $86M Energy Savings Performance Contract (ESPC) at Kadena Air Base, Japan.

Geothermal Panel Discussion and Forthcoming AF OEA Solicitation for Geothermal Pilots—June 7, 2024

On June 7 at the New York Energy Capital Assembly at Nasdaq in New York City, the Air Force Office of Energy Assurance (AF OEA) participated in a panel discussion on geothermal energy – the Air Force’s top energy innovation priority given its promise of providing 24/7, clean, secure, on-site, base load power nearly anywhere. The Air Force is conducting multiple pilots to assess the technical and economic viability of cutting-edge geothermal technologies with the hope that the host installations can enter into long-term power purchase agreements.

Yokota cuts costs, boosts readiness with new power plant—Nov. 6, 2023

Airmen from the 374th Airlift Wing hosted a ribbon-cutting ceremony to unveil a new power plant at Yokota Air Base, Japan, Nov. 3. The combined heating and power plant came as a result of an energy savings performance contract with Schneider Electric that went into effect in 2020. The plant modernizes and expands energy control systems for Yokota, reduces the base’s carbon footprint and allows access to power independent from local sources. Read the full article...

Micro-Reactor Pilot Program Reaches Major Milestone—Aug. 31, 2023

The Department of the Air Force, in partnership with the Defense Logistics Agency Energy, reached a critical milestone Aug. 31, in piloting advanced nuclear energy technology with the issuance of the Notice of Intent to Award a contract to Oklo Inc.

Oklo Inc. will site, design, construct, own and operate a micro-reactor facility licensed by the Nuclear Regulatory Commission at Eielson Air Force Base, Alaska. Air Force launches Energy-as-a-Service pilot program at Hanscom—Feb. 14, 2023

On Feb. 14, the Department of the Air Force is kicking off a $10 million next-generation energy performance contract that will deliver resilient and reliable energy at Hanscom Air Force Base, Massachusetts.
