JOINT BASE SAN ANTONIO-LACKLAND, Texas. The Department of the Air Force awarded its first contract to determine whether a power plant using geopressured geothermal systems, or GGS, can generate the clean energy needed for a base to achieve energy resilience.

The contract awards Sage Geosystems, Inc. a grant of $1.9 million, which the company will match with its own funding, to develop a demonstration project at an off-site test well in Starr County, Texas, in 2025. Read the full article...

FEDS Spotlight provides an opportunity for agencies to honor federal employees going above and beyond typical day-to-day responsibilities to achieve mission success while also cutting energy waste, reducing costs, optimizing performance, and advancing America's progress toward energy independence, resilience, and security. The Federal Energy Management Program (FEMP) will honor federal energy champions selected for recognition on October 17, 2024, in Washington, D.C. Honorees were selected by agency leaders and peers as federal champions who are working hard to implement exceptional resilient, efficient, and secure energy and water management practices and projects, while also helping their agencies to achieve mission success. The following Air Force personnel were selected as recipients of these prestigious awards:

JOINT BASE SAN ANTONIO-LACKLAND, Texas – The Department of the Air Force plans to reduce its carbon footprint and enhance energy resiliency at installations by taking advantage of new power-generation technology.

Seeking to fortify defense infrastructure, the DAF is awarding a contract for a prototype flex-fuel power generator to Mainspring Energy, Inc. The company will test the 125/230-kilowatt linear generator at Travis Air Force Base, California, beginning this fall. The Federal Energy Management Program (FEMP) recently recognized a team of Air Force Civil Engineering Center (AFCEC) energy professionals with the Federal Energy and Water Management Award. This prestigious accolade commends their outstanding contributions to one of the Department of the Air Force's most significant water conservation initiatives, achieved through an $86M Energy Savings Performance Contract (ESPC) at Kadena Air Base, Japan.

On June 7 at the New York Energy Capital Assembly at Nasdaq in New York City, the Air Force Office of Energy Assurance (AF OEA) participated in a panel discussion on geothermal energy – the Air Force’s top energy innovation priority given its promise of providing 24/7, clean, secure, on-site, base load power nearly anywhere. The Air Force is conducting multiple pilots to assess the technical and economic viability of cutting-edge geothermal technologies with the hope that the host installations can enter into long-term power purchase agreements.

Airmen from the 374th Airlift Wing hosted a ribbon-cutting ceremony to unveil a new power plant at Yokota Air Base, Japan, Nov. 3. The combined heating and power plant came as a result of an energy savings performance contract with Schneider Electric that went into effect in 2020. The Department of the Air Force, in partnership with the Defense Logistics Agency Energy, reached a critical milestone Aug. 31, in piloting advanced nuclear energy technology with the issuance of the Notice of Intent to Award a contract to Oklo Inc.

Oklo Inc. will site, design, construct, own and operate a micro-reactor facility licensed by the Nuclear Regulatory Commission at Eielson Air Force Base, Alaska. The notice initiates the acquisition process to potentially award a 30-year, firm-fixed-price contract to the vendor after successfully obtaining an NRC license. Read the full article...

On Feb. 14, the Department of the Air Force is kicking off a $10 million next-generation energy performance contract that will deliver resilient and reliable energy at Hanscom Air Force Base, Massachusetts.

The pilot project is the federal government’s first-ever effort to adopt and integrate a commercial Energy-as-a-Service, or EaaS, business model, which gives customers access to energy management services without upfront costs, to provide resilient, efficient, and cost-effective energy that will benefit an installation.
