Antimicrobial patent
Shane Skibba, an intern at the Tyndall AFB, Florida, Air Force Civil Engineer Center lab in 2019, applies treated paint to a cinderblock wall with a cloth, making sure to cover every crevice. The wall, in Building 1117, previously had mold growth on it. After being treated with the lab’s antimicrobial paint, the wall remained mold-free for at least six months before needing to be recharged. (U.S. Air Force photo by Bruce Salter)

Antimicrobial paint
The Air Force is licensing patent rights to a disease-control coating additive to a private-sector company who wants to put the formula in paint and other products. The formula was invented by Dr. Jeff Owens, a senior chemist with the Air Force Civil Engineer Center. Owens developed the technology in collaboration with the Army — collaborative research and development funded by the Defense Threat Reduction Agency, Joint Science and Technology Office under the Chemical and Biological Defense program. Antimicrobial paint
An Air Force Civil Engineer Center Lab team member looks at a sample of the Pseudomonas aeruginosa bacteria, a human pathogen that has been proven very difficult to kill.
