Waste-to-energy research

U.S. Air Force Academy Cadet Marcus Penner places samples from an anaerobic digester into a laboratory oven at the Air Force Civil Engineer Center’s Readiness Directorate at Tyndall Air Force Base, Fla., recently. The test is designed to measure the solid content of the digestate to determine how well the digester is performing. Penner worked with AFCEC scientists during a six-week research project to test and develop a system to convert food waste to methane gas as a potential energy source at expeditionary bases.
