Air Force Base Realignment and Closure (BRAC)

BRAC Program Management Division

The Air Force Base Realignment and Closure program supports Department of the Air Force mission readiness through environmental investigation, restoration, and returning Air Force properties to communities for beneficial reuse. As part of the Air Force Civil Engineer Center's Environmental Management Directorate, BRAC ensures environmental cleanup meets federal and state standards while partnering with communities to maximize redevelopment opportunities.

The program's commitment to environmental stewardship and community partnership continues long after property transfer to remedy mission-related impacts. The Air Force has invested more than $4.7 billion adapting cleanup efforts at former DAF installations as environmental science advances and regulations evolve. This ongoing work directly supports warfighter readiness by reducing excess infrastructure costs and allowing resources to focus on operational installations.

AIR FORCE BRAC PORTFOLIO

The Division oversees cleanup and property transfer at 40 former bases throughout the U.S. stemming from five rounds of Congressional closure decisions. Since 1988 the Air Force has completed property transfers of 36 installations and transferred over 86,700 acres back to surrounding communities. These former military installations have been transformed into vital community assets including public airports, educational facilities, wildlife refuges, business and technology parks supporting hundreds of thousands of jobs nationwide.

As cleanup work progresses and remaining properties are transfered to local communities, these former installations serve as models for successful environmental remediation and beneficial reuse, with several projects earning National Federal Facility Excellence in Site Reuse Awards from the Environmental Protection Agency.
