AFCEC Environmental Management Directorate provides centralized environmental compliance, planning and restoration program support across all Air Force and Space Force installations.             

Mission: Enable the Department of the Air Force mission through sound stewardship and strict compliance with environmental laws.

Vision: To be the world leader in sustaining and promoting sound environmental performance for our Airmen, Guardians, their families, and communities.

Provides effective and proactive centralized environmental execution support and integration activities across all levels of the Air Force enterprise. The division facilitates the AF Environmental Management System framework, provides planning, programming, budgeting, execution and financial improvement and audit readiness expertise for environmental compliance, conservation, pollution prevention, and restoration execution, manages the development and award of centralized performance based acquisitions, performs data analysis and delivers reporting capabilities, develops global training opportunities, and leads the AF environmental inspection process.

The Legislative, Regulatory, and Technical Support Division integrates policy engagement with technical expertise to protect and sustain Department of the Air Force installations. We advocate mission requirements, partner with regulatory agencies, and provide unified environmental guidance to ensure long-term operational readiness and compliance.

• Legislative & Regulatory Support: The Legislative and Regulatory Engagement Branch partners with government agencies and regulatory bodies to protect Air Force and Space Force operations. The branch monitors state-level legislative and regulatory actions, educates partners on military training and testing needs, and builds cooperative alliances. By delivering a unified military voice on critical issues, we protect installations, preserve mission capabilities, and secure our freedom to operate.
• Environmental Quality & Restoration Technical Support: The Technical Support branch delivers the highest level of environmental compliance and restoration by providing dedicated technical reach-back and subject matter expertise to Air Staff, installation support teams, field personnel, and execution agents. The branch offers comprehensive technical solutions and program management across diverse specialties, including environmental chemistry, groundwater studies, risk assessment, air quality, waste and water compliance, engineering solutions, and natural and cultural resource management.

The Environmental Quality Division provides direct support to installations and leads service-wide environmental initiatives. The division operates through four Regional Installation Support Branches covering the East, Midwest, West, and Alaska Central regions, plus a dedicated Wildland Fire Branch. Each regional branch advocates for installations in their area and provides regulatory and technical support, and coordinates with installation environmental leadership.

The Wildland Fire Branch protects people, property and the environment from wildfire threats. The branch provides wildland fire guidance and real-time threat information, trains firefighters, and communicates critical wildfire information to Air Force and Space Force leaders, emergency management agencies, and community partners. The branch supports installations through 16 Wildland Support Modules located across the country.

The Environmental Restoration Division provides environmental cleanup support across all installations. The division offers programming and execution expertise to transform Department of the Air Force environmental challenges into operational opportunities.

The Base Realignment and Closure Program Management Division conducts complex environmental cleanup operations at former Air Force bases to enable property transfer and community redevelopment. By successfully completing environmental cleanup and property disposal, the division reduces Air Force infrastructure costs and allows the service to focus resources on current mission-critical installations. Learn more here.

The AFCEC CERCLA Administrative Record Search website provides a means to search and review public documents regarding environmental testing and sampling conducted at Air Force installations in compliance with the federal Comprehensive Environmental Response, Compensation, and Liability Act (CERCLA). These documents form the basis for environmental response actions and demonstrate the public’s opportunity to participate in and comment on the selection of the response action. AFCEC continuously updates the Administrative record for each installation until the remedy selection documentation is complete.
