Former Plattsburgh Air Force Base, N.Y.

Plattsburgh Air Force Base, N.Y., was one of the oldest military installations in the country at the time of its closure having participated in every major American war from the Revolutionary War to Operation Desert Storm. Plattsburgh served primarily as a bomber wing, supporting American troops through World War II and the Cuban Missile Crisis.

Plattsburgh AFB was recommended for realignment by the U.S. Department of Defense Base Realignment and Closure Commission in 1993. The base was officially closed Sept. 30, 1995. Today, the former Plattsburgh AFB is one of 40 former installations managed by the Air Force Civil Engineer Center, headquartered in San Antonio, Texas.

Environmental activities
AFCEC continues to work closely with the Environmental Protection Agency and the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation to ensure environmental cleanup activities satisfy all regulatory standards while protecting human health and the environment. AFCEC has invested $80 million on BRAC cleanup actions at the former installation. The addition cost to complete cleanup is $12 million.

Property transfer
AFCEC achieved whole base transfer in 2012. Today the Plattsburgh Airbase Redevelopment Corporation has attracted over 60 tenants in the fields of aerospace, rail transportation, market research, manufacturing, warehousing and health care to name a few. The former base is also home to Plattsburgh International Airport, a multi-purpose airport servicing passengers in nearby Montreal, Vermont and Lake Placid. The airport has generated more than 350 jobs and contributed an estimated $38.6 million in economic activity since it opened in 2007.

Path forward
The Air Force and its partners will continue to work together to complete environmental cleanup for the benefit of the community.
